The main benefit since the fare reform: the TFI 90-Minute Fare — a single ticket for all your trips (and transfers) within a 90-minute window. Adult: €2.00 • Young Adult/Student: €1.00 • Child: €0.65.

Another key advantage: fare capping. Once you reach a certain amount, you don’t pay anything more for the day or week. Daily cap Zone 1: €6.00 (adult) • €3.00 (young/student) • €1.95 (child). Weekly cap (Mon–Sun): €24.00 / €12.00 / €7.80.

Good to know: cash is still accepted on public transport, but it’s more expensive (for example, €2.00 for a “short fare” vs €1.50 with an adult Leap Card, and €2.60 for a “long fare” vs €2.00 with the card — plus, you can combine bus/Luas/DART within 90 minutes). You’ll also need exact change on buses (no change given). The Leap Card remains the cheapest and easiest option.

The Different Types of Leap Card

Everyone can get one! There are several Leap Card types in Dublin — for children, adults, teens, and students. Whatever your situation, you can easily get one! And the reason why you should have a Leap Card in Dublin is simple: it saves you about 20% on fares, and as mentioned above, 50% if you’re 19–25 or a student.

Several card types are available depending on your situation:

• Adult (standard): €5 deposit + min. €5 top-up. Available online and at TFI agents.
• Child 5–15: €3 deposit. The Child 5–8 card gives free access to the TFI network (dedicated card to be requested online). Child 16–18: personalised card (photo required).
• Young Adult 19–25: available for all aged 19–25 (until the day before turning 26), 50% off fares.
• Student: for those aged 16–18 or 26+ enrolled full-time (≥16 hrs/week, ≥6 months/26 weeks). Apply online and have documents verified before collecting from a student agent (allow a few days). 50% off fares.
• Leap Visitor (tourists): unlimited travel on city buses, Luas, DART & commuter trains in Zone 1. 1 day: €8 • 3 days: €18 • 7 days: €24. Available at Dublin Airport (T1/T2), city centre shops and online.

Language school students: if you’re 19–25, the Young Adult card is usually the easiest (and cheapest). If you’re 26+ (or 16–18) and studying full-time (≥16 hrs/week, ≥6 months), the Student Leap Card is the one for you.

Where to Buy and Top Up?

• Where to buy: over 2,000 agents (PostPoint shops, retailers, ticket desks), the Irish Post Office, vending machines at some stations, and online orders. The Young Adult, Student, and Child 16–18 cards are personalised (photo required) and can be purchased online.
• How to top up:
  1. Use the Leap Top-Up App (iPhone 7+ / Android NFC) to recharge and check your balance in seconds,
  2. At TFI agents,
  3. At Luas/DART/train ticket machines.
• Auto Top-Up: automatic recharge (€30/40/50) when your balance drops below €10 (set up online via SEPA direct debit).

Once you have your Leap Card, all that’s left is to top it up with credit.

How to Use It?

To validate a journey, tap your card on the reader (validator) every time you board: on buses, you tap on only when boarding (no tap off); on Luas, DART, and commuter trains, you tap on before boarding and tap off when leaving/exiting the platform, so the correct fare is charged (a default fare is deducted at tap-on, then adjusted at tap-off). This routine is essential to benefit from the TFI 90-Minute Fare: tap on for each new service, and as long as your next tap-on occurs within 90 minutes of the first, your transfers (bus/tram/train in Zone 1) are included in the single fare.
